The university sector benefits from government funding which encourages research into a diverse array of areas stretching across the humanities and the sciences. The Management School and Law School address a number of areas within the above disciplines and examples can be seen within the Management and Law School blog. These include the economic cost of carbon capture technologies, the ramifications of the development of a trial without jury and the predictions concerning the length and severity of recession. These are areas that pose important questions and to ensure that the benefit of this research is passed to society academic papers containing results are published and interactions take place with both business and government.

With this said it must be remembered that one of the primary methods by which expertise is passed onto society is through teaching. Both Schools provide a wide variety of course provisionranging from foundation level though undergrauate degree level to doctoral supervision that capitalise on a range of research and knowledge that has been accrued by indivdual academics over many years. Students learn and then apply this knowledge within a variety of situations throughout their careers.

To constantly improve the learning and teaching process there are a number of governmental bodies which fund areas that directly relate to the educational side of the university sector. To underline the importance of this concept the university forwards that excellence in both teaching and research are mutually dependent within its mission statement.

One of these learning and teaching projects has been jointly funded by JISC and the HEA that stretches across a number of universities. Despite involving highbrow discussions concerning the the various benefits of andragogy the main aim has been based upon a simple concept to release education materials in an open source format enabling the dissemination of learning and teaching materials across the world.

One of the benefits of approach this is that materials do not need to be placed within an institutional framework, can be released onto the web and can re purposed without fear of copyright infringement. Bradford students can begin to tailor their learning through the raft of social networks and mobile devices that they already use, this way the educational experience becomes a process that is: Just enough, (providing students with materials in manageable sections that fit in with the section of time used for study) Just in time, (materials being delivered when needed such as in a work place situation or a field trip in mobile format), and Just for me(whereby content is provided to a student in a number of forms for example a pod cast that can be accessed by a mobile device alongside the traditional paper format).
